How electric cars feel to drive

Electric cars behave a bit differently from petrol or diesel models. Here are the key traits:

Instant torque

Electric motors deliver their shove straight away, so EVs are nippy off the line. The result is a brisk, responsive drive, especially around town.

Quieter running

EVs are much quieter than combustion cars, inside and out. That means a calmer, more pleasant drive - more playlist, less powertrain.

Centre of gravity and handling

With the battery pack mounted low in the floor, EVs usually have a lower centre of gravity. That helps handling and road-holding for a more stable, secure feel.

Regenerative braking

EVs harvest energy as you slow down, turning movement back into electricity to top up the battery. It gives the brakes a different feel and can reduce wear.

One-pedal driving

Strong regen means some EVs can be driven mostly on the accelerator, with the brake pedal used less. It takes a little getting used to, but can boost comfort and efficiency in stop-start city traffic.

Because of their heavy batteries, EVs can weigh more than comparable petrol or diesel cars. That can influence how they behave, particularly in quick direction changes and through bends.
